Oryx and Crake

by Margaret Atwood

In 'Oryx and Crake', Margaret Atwood crafts a chilling narration through the eyes of Snowman, previously known as Jimmy, who may be the last human alive after a pandemic caused by rampant genetic engineering ravages humanity. Living in primitive conditions and garbed in old bedsheets, Snowman is haunted by the memories of his lost friend Crake, a genius of biotechnology, and Oryx, the enigmatic woman they both loved. As the caretaker of the genetically engineered 'Children of Crake', Snowman sets out on a perilous odyssey through the ruins of a desolate world, contending with the unpredictable hazards of a once technologically advanced civilization, now reduced to wilderness. In this post-apocalyptic milieu, Atwood warns of the consequences of unbridled scientific experimentation, wrapped in the poignancy of lost love and the struggle for survival.
