The Resisters

by Gish Jen

In the not-so-distant future, AutoAmerica is a land divided between the privileged 'Netted' and the marginalized 'Surplus.' The Netted occupy dry high ground while the Surplus cluster on endangered swampland. Against this backdrop, a Surplus couple, a former professor and a still-practicing lawyer, welcome a Blasian daughter, Gwen, with an extraordinary talent for baseball. Her skill draws her into the exclusive world of the Netted and onto AutoAmerica's Olympic team, aimed at defeating rival ChinRussia. But her rise in the sports world causes tension, as her mother advocates for the rights of the oppressed Surplus. 'The Resisters' narrates the fierce battle for equality and the personal struggles of a family caught in a society's stark divide, combining the thrill of sports with the heart of resistance against a tyrannical regime.
