Absurdistan

by Gary Shteyngart

'Absurdistan' is a sharply satirical journey that follows the misadventures of Misha Vainberg, a grossly overweight man with a penchant for cultural studies and an intense love for New York City. Known to some as Snack Daddy, Misha, the son of Russia's 1,238th richest man, is a walking catastrophe trapped in a farcical tale of geopolitics and personal mishaps. After his father commits a heinous crime in Russia, Misha's hope of returning to America and his beloved girlfriend are quashed, pushing him toward the fantastical nation of Absurdistan. Here, he purchases a counterfeit passport, but is accidentally swept into a civil war that crowns him the minister of multicultural affairs. Amidst the bizarre conflict fueled by bungling ethnic rivalries, Misha navigates a chaotic world of oil politics, gunfights, and romantic turmoil, questioning if a normal life is at all possible for someone like him in the modern world.
