The Ferryman

by Justin Cronin

On the idyllic archipelago of Prospera, hiding from an outside world in decline, inhabitants live out their days under the watchful eye of the Designer, their lives governed by the monitors on their forearms that ensure optimal health and well-being. When these monitors dip below a critical threshold, citizens are 'retired' to the Nursery to rejuvenate and reset their lives anew. Proctor Bennett, a loyal ferryman, shepherds the individuals through their next journey dutifully. Yet, disquieting dreams and a rapidly falling monitor reading lead him to question the paradise's truths, especially after receiving an ominous warning from his father during a forced retirement. The undercurrent of discontent among the Support Staff speaks of the Arrivalists—a rumored force initiating a revolution. As Proctor's doubts surge, he's drawn into a quest for the sinister realities masked by Prospera's utopian facade.
