We Ride Upon Sticks

by Quan Barry

In 1989 Danvers, Massachusetts, the high school field hockey team, the Danvers Falcons, are willing to go to any lengths to ensure their victory in the state finals, even if it means embracing dark, witch-like powers. Rooted firmly in the 80s, the story follows the team, led by captain Abby Putnam, a descendant of the Salem Witch Trials accuser, and co-captain Jen Fiorenza with her iconic bleach-blonde hair. The girls reject outdated notions of femininity and, through their sport and the bonds of friendship, embark on a humor-laced journey towards self-discovery and empowerment. Their mystical, rebellious quest unfolds in the shadow of their town's witch trial heritage, as they forge a path through a memorable season.
