Mislaid

by Nell Zink

Set against the backdrop of 1960s Virginia, 'Mislaid' unfolds an eccentric tale of Peggy, a lesbian freshman cast under the spell of Lee, a gay poet and professor. Their ill-suited affair leads to a hasty wedding and parenthood, yet a decade later drives Peggy to flee with her daughter, while leaving her son behind. Disguising themselves within an African-American community, Peggy and her daughter navigate a life built on deceits. Their parallel lives with Lee's son, Byrdie, converge in adulthood, triggering a cascade of revelations and mishaps in a deftly comedic Shakespearean finale.
