The Luminaries

by Eleanor Catton

'The Luminaries' is a tale of intrigue and ambition set in the thriving West Coast goldfields in 1866. The story unfolds as Walter Moody, who is aiming to carve his fortune, arrives and finds himself entangled in a labyrinth of unsolved crimes. Upon his arrival, Moody walks into a covert assembly of twelve local men delving into the perplexing mysteries that haunt their small town. With a missing wealthy man, the attempted suicide of a prostitute, and the unexplained wealth found in a drunkard's home, the plot thickens. As Moody is pulled deeper into the enigma, he discovers connections that are as intricate as the constellations in the night sky, and he learns that appearances can be deceiving, and the truth is far from straightforward.
