Scythe

by Neal Shusterman

In a future where immortality has been achieved and humanity has eradicated all natural forms of death, Scythes wield the solemn responsibility of controlling population size by selectively ending lives. Citra and Rowan, two teenagers, are reluctantly recruited as apprentices to a Scythe, a role that demands they learn the art of death. As they delve into their grim duties, they realize that their new position isn't just about mortality but also about ethical power and corruption. The heavy burden of this new reality becomes perilously personal when they discover that only one of them will ultimately be bestowed the title of Scythe, and their first assignment could be to glean the other.
