Road to the Breaking

by Chris Bennett

In the tumultuous backdrop of early 1860s America, Captain Nathaniel Chambers, a decorated war hero, confronts a life-altering choice as he returns home to Virginia upon learning of his father's death. The news is dire; his widowed mother is at the mercy of a nefarious neighbor coveting the family plantation. Trapped between his military principles and the looming inheritance of a slaveholding estate, the prospect of becoming what he detests weighs heavily on him, even as the nation edges closer to the abyss of civil war. As Nathan grapples with familial duty and personal convictions, his journey forces him to face a country rife with injustice and the premonition of a burgeoning conflict, a road that may lead not only to his family's salvation or ruin but also to the nation's irreversible fracture.
