Shards

by Ismet Prcic

Shards is the stirring tale of Ismet Prcic, a young Bosnian immigrant grappling with the traumas of war and dislocation. Once safe in California, he finds himself haunted by both the family he left behind and his own war-torn identity. Through a patchwork of memories, stories, and vivid confessions, Ismet attempts to reconcile his harrowing past with his uncertain present. Struggling to anchor himself in his new life, his narrative becomes intertwined with that of Mustafa, a fellow Bosnian whose decisions anchor him to the battlefield. The novel deftly captures the angst of immigration and the struggle for self-discovery, as Ismet confronts the fragments of a life rendered unrecognizable by war's upheaval.
