When We Were Birds

by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo

In 'When We Were Birds', we discover a tapestry of life and death weaved into the streets of Port Angeles, Trinidad. Here, Darwin, a gravedigger in search of his estranged father and fortune, crosses paths with Yejide, a woman on the cusp of inheriting the ability to commune with the dead. Bound by the invisible threads of fate, their stories converge within the hallowed grounds of Fidelis cemetery, amidst a backdrop of ancestral magic, and the haunting presence of corbeau - sentinel birds linked to their lineage. As Darwin and Yejide's worlds entangle, they find in each other a reflection of their longing and loss, leading to a crescendo of reckoning with past griefs and a hopeful melody of rejuvenation.
