Something Red

by Jennifer Gilmore

Jennifer Gilmore's 'Something Red' is set in the transformative year of 1979, against the backdrop of Washington D.C. Here, the Goldstein family each faces personal struggles amidst a time when the Cold War's tension is easing, and the era of protest seems to have passed. Dennis deals with a career he's unsure of while upholding his father's activist legacy; Sharon, a caterer for high society, finds solace in a group that promises more than it can give. Benjamin, lively and unaware, steps into the world of higher education and burgeoning social awareness, and Vanessa, the youngest at sixteen, seeks belonging in the city's hardcore punk scene. Their individual paths mirror the country's own search for identity, as they grapple with their roles in a society that's rapidly changing. 'Something Red' weaves a tapestry of family, idealism, and espionage, baring the heart of what it means to be radical in a world moving on from the revolutionary fires of its past.
