Pat Peoples believes his life is like a film directed by God, destined for a happy ending once he gets fit and emotionally savvy. His optimism sustains him through years in a mental institution and awkward reintegration into society. Yet his goal, reuniting with his ex-wife Nikki, seems impossible as his family avoids the topic.
