The Moor's Account

by Laila Lalami

Envisioned through the lens of speculative fiction, "The Moor's Account" retells the harrowing journey of the 1527 Narvez expedition from the perspective of the first African explorer of the Americas, Mustafa al-Zamori, known as Estebanico. A Moroccan slave among Spanish conquistadors, Estebanico's narrative comes to life as he endures hardships of survival against all odds—storms, disease, starvation, and the dangers of a wild, uncharted territory. Over the years, he evolves from a slave into a transformative figure: a healer, an equal among those who once commanded him, and a poignant storyteller. His story, omitted from history and given voice by Laila Lalami, sheds light on themes of identity, community, and the inherent power of sharing one's truth.
