Salvage the Bones

by Jesmyn Ward

Situated in the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, 'Salvage the Bones' weaves a narrative of the Batiste family as they brace for the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina. With their mother gone, the father, a habitual drinker, struggles to express care for his family. The story unfolds through the eyes of Esch, a fourteen-year-old girl who has just learned of her pregnancy. Around her, her brothers grapple with their own challengesSkeetah, striving to protect his pitbull's vulnerable new litter; Randall, who has aspirations beyond the reach of their poverty; and the youngest, Junior, who seeks his own place within the familial unit. Over twelve days, we witness this group of siblings navigate the forces of nature and the turbulent waters of adolescence, driven by love and unity in the face of stark privation.
