Chains

by Laurie Halse Anderson

Set against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War, 'Chains' follows the story of thirteen-year-old Isabel fighting for her freedom. After the death of their owner, Isabel and her sister Ruth are deceitfully turned over to the cruel Locktons in New York City. While the Locktons oppose the American Revolution, Isabel meets Curzon, a slave linked to the Patriots. Curzon convinces her to spy on the Locktons, who are privy to British invasion plans. Isabel's initial reluctance fades when disaster strikes Ruth, prompting her to consider trading her espionage for the chance of freedom.
