Youth

by J. M. Coetzee

'Youth' is an introspective journey of a young man from 1950s South Africa, who is yearning to break free from his homeland and experience the world. With aspirations to turn life into art, he sets off, only to discover that the London of the 1960s is not the inspirational haven he imagined. As he trudges through a mundane existence as a computer programmer, he faces a crisis of creativity and identity, his aspirations of artistry dwindling amidst a series of dispassionate encounters and existential dilemmas. Through the character's search for meaning and artistic expression, Coetzee delivers a profound exploration of the challenges of coming-of-age in a world that often seems indifferent to youthful dreams.
